The station improve is being rebid with hopes to attract wider contractor curiosity following a rethink of the scheme, which is able to now launch with early contractor involvement and detailed design.
The earlier two-stage design and construct contest final summer time did not ship, prompting the council, Community Rail and East Midlands Railway to overtake the procurement.
Backed by almost £18m of levelling up funding, the plan will carry Leicester’s Grade II listed Victorian station again to life with structural modifications, inner modifications, telecoms and M&E upgrades, public realm works, and freeway modifications — all delivered to Community Rail requirements.
The brand new design contains relocating the principle entrance from London Highway to Station Avenue, making a public plaza with rainwater gardens and bushes, and revealing the station’s unique frontage.
A contemporary invitation to tender will likely be launched by 29 July, with building attributable to begin by 30 April 2026 and end in October 2028.
