From the Archives: November 5, 1964

This 1964 picture is maybe the closest ENR ever got here to dabbling in Op Artwork. It exhibits two employees standing inside a big conical melancholy with fluted sides, which is a plastic type product of glass-fiber-reinforced polyester resin.

The shape will probably be used to forged tree-like concrete members to border the IBM Backyard State Workplace Constructing in Cranford, N.J. Every concrete tree roofs a 22.5-ft sq..

A consistently curving profile tapered from the column base to a 10-in.-dia waist about midway up after which flared right into a column capital and slab. Striations run up the column and radiate to the sides of the slab.

Adjoining bushes various 27 in. in peak, leaving vertical gaps to be stuffed in with plate glass, forming clerestory home windows. Portland, Ore.-based Timber Constructions, Inc. used wooden fashions as patterns to manufacture the types.

Every set of types comprised 9 sections: 4 slab quadrants, one capital, and 4 column sections, bolted along with flanged ribs. After casting, stripping away the types proved to be very troublesome. The answer concerned drilling 120 small holes into every set of types, and filling them with putty.

After every casting the putty was cleaned out, tubes inserted, and compressed air was blown in, which loosened the types and allowed them to be pried free. Casting was carried out by the final contractor, Mahony-Troast Building Co., Clifton, N.J.
